ABOUT THE PROJECT
NATIONAL SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT STRATEGY
The project of developing the National Sustainable Development Strategy of the Republic of Serbia was initiated by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and the Belgrade Office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as a direct response to the World Summit on Sustainable Development and its call for the development of national sustainable development strategies. In view of the macro effects of the Sustainable Development Strategy and the need for its harmonization with the National Strategy for Accession to the EU, the task of coordinating the project was assigned to the Office of the Deputy Prime-Minister of the Government, based on the Decision made by the Government of the Republic of Serbia in December 2005.
The Serbian Sustainable Development Strategy should provide a framework for sustainable economic development of Serbia, by using the experience and findings arrived at through the implementation of the Poverty Reduction Strategy and the Strategy of the Accession of Serbia to the European Union and by identifying specific measures for the preservation of resources along with an accelerated progress in the relevant segments of Serbia's accession to the EU.
At the same time, the adoption of the Sustainable Development Strategy becomes the responsibility of the present and all future EU member states and is therefore a very important segment of the action plan of every candidate country.
In line with international practice, the drafting of the Serbian Sustainable Development Strategy has been organized as a widely participatory process with the engagement of key stakeholders, and the structure of the Strategy is based in three „pillars“ of sustainable development, namely:
- Knowledge-based economy,
- Social-economic issues, and
- Environment.
On the basis of the above structure, the topics of the Strategy resulted from the National Conference on the Vision of Sustainable Development of Serbia in 2017, with the participation of more than 40 experts from the academic community, the institutions of the Government and NGOs. Several months of experts' engagement led to a wealth of material for the drafting of the Sustainable Development Strategy, and around mid-August the first draft Strategy was presented to the key stakeholders.
During the second half of 2007, the draft Sustainable Development Strategy will be subject to a public debate in cities and towns across Serbia, and it will be harmonized with a number of sectoral strategies and most recent initiatives of the Government of the Republic of Serbia. The final version of the Strategy should be adopted at the beginning of 2008, to be followed right away by implementation, as a response to key development issues in the Republic of Serbia during the first half of 2008.
